WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY? It all starts with the concept. Too many clients get caught up in trying to achieve a particular look or sound and that becomes the driving force of their production. Trying to mimic a big-budget spot for ten-thousand dollars is usually a recipe for disaster and it does a disservice to the message you're trying to convey. Rather than letting the helicopter aerial shot dictate the production, we recommend the opposite. Get back to basics - what makes your product or message unique? We're masters at taking your concept and matching it with creative ideas and realistic budgets that tell your story.
ESTABLISH PARTNERSHIPS. We take pride in our ability to partner with you in bringing your idea to life. However, we realize that different clients have different needs. Where one project might require our full involvement from start to finish, another might benefit from just a few of the services we provide. We're ready to play whatever role you need. But involving us early in the design phase has elevated many of our clients' projects to levels they wouldn't have previously imagined. We do this every day, and have for quite a while, so we have some ideas on how to make your production sing.
SOUND IMPROVES THE PICTURE. Steven Spielberg spends twice the money most directors spend on sound production. Why? He knows that the THUD foreshadowing the T-Rex can be scarier than the beast itself. Great sound completes the picture at a fraction of the cost. And, fortunately, we have great sound engineers on staff as well.
KILLER TRACKS. Stock music is now big business. Even name-brand musicians are favoring this ready-made market over the cut-throat competition of the record biz. From major orchestral arrangements to catchy hooks you’d listen to at home, stock music can make a small budget sound bigger.
DIRECTOR vs. DP. Hiring a DP is absolutely essential. Hiring a Director is not. The DP - Director of Photography - gives a spot its look. A Director can add a unique vision. But with careful pre-production, most limited-budget spots can be done without a director, especially if there is no on-camera talent to direct. Put in perspective, we can - and have - hired world-class Hollywood DPs for the same day rate as a local, low-to-mid-level director.
IS IT 35, 16 OR 24P? Today, the difference is more in the eye of the professional - not the average viewer. We recently bid-out a project on both film and video. Film stock, processing and transfer came to $18,000. Video - under $100. High definition 24P video is now used in major motion pictures. When lit properly and color corrected in post, it can take a trained eye to detect the difference.
BRING IT TO LIFE - ANIMATE IT. Animation includes a wide range of techniques from Disney-type cell drawings to pre-packaged computer tricks. There are now so many talented people pouring out of schools that the cost of this computer wizardry has become competitive. From dancing logos to constructing a city in seconds, animation can no longer be ruled out because of budget.
BLUE SCREEN PUTS YOU THERE. So, you want to shoot somewhere your money can’t reach? Through the magic of compositing, our shooting stage and post-production techniques can put anyone, anywhere. Now you can do on a small budget what Hollywood productions have been doing for years.
STILL vs. LIVE ACTION. Ken Burns’ documentaries showed how photographs can be as dramatic as live action when you add movement to them. The growth of available stock footage has made this approach a powerful storytelling tool.
NON-UNION ACTORS. Following the Law of Unintended Consequences, the 2000 Actors strike created a new generation of talented, non-union actors who work at fixed rates, without residuals. From stage performers and comedians seeking day jobs, to lawyers and housewives with Second City or University training - they’ve made it affordable to use skilled talent without breaking the bank..
